VANCOUVER, October 8, 2026 – Organized by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in BC and the Embassy of Canada to the Philippines, Marshall McLuhan Fellow Carmela Fonbuena concluded the final leg of her Canadian speaking tour in Vancouver, where she addressed community members, academics, and media advocates on the evolving role of journalism in safeguarding democracy.

Speaking to an audience of more than 40 at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Oakridge campus, the acclaimed investigative reporter discussed the mounting challenges posed by shifting geopolitics, foreign threats, and rampant digital disinformation targeting democratic institutions. Drawing from her deep experience reporting in the Philippines, Fonbuena highlighted how press freedom serves as a vital pillar against authoritarian overreach and systemic corruption. She stressed that modern reporters must keep innovating to re-engage public audiences increasingly disengaged from traditional news coverage. She also called for stronger strategic alliances between independent investigative journalists and grassroots pro-democracy organizations to counter digital propaganda campaigns effectively. The discussion also touched on the growing role of Gen Z in ensuring responsible journalism.
During the interactive discussion, Fonbuena explored how local digital ecosystems mirror global disinformation trends, urging communities to strengthen media literacy. She emphasized that protecting democratic principles requires a shared commitment between investigative newsrooms and the citizens they serve.
Fonbuena’s presentation highlighted Canada’s role in promoting press freedom worldwide through initiatives like the Marshall McLuhan Fellowship. Attendees engaged in a candid exchange on actionable strategies to support independent outlets operating under hostile political conditions. The Vancouver presentation served as an inspiring finale to a tour dedicated to building international solidarity around truth and public accountability.
The successful execution of the event was made possible through the dedicated support of community partners, generous sponsors, and hardworking volunteers – Bayan BC, Egan’s Cleaning Services (ECS), FDU Vancouver Campus, Lester de Guzman, Filipino-Canadian Construction Society (FCCS), Filipino Society of Engineers in BC (FSEBC), Global Pinoy Diaspora Canada through Treenee Lopez, and Mabuhay House Society, whose behind-the-scenes efforts brought the community together.
